TIP-CER – INNOVATIVE TECHNOLOGY FOR THE PRODUCTION OF POWDERS FOR CERAMIC PRODUCTS WITH HIGH ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY, ENERGY EFFICIENCY AND REDUCED CO₂ EMISSIONS
Project Leader: Fabrizio Marani
Team members: Lorenzo Battaglioli, Vincenzo Fornataro, Alberto Rovacchi, Roberto Scalas, Antonio Scalese
Start date: 18/05/2022
Duration: 36 months
Call for proposals: INNOVATION AGREEMENT Ministerial Decree 31/12/2021 – MISE Project No. 84 No. F/310084/01/X56 – PNRR M4C2-12.2 bis “Innovation Agreements”
LB’s role: proposer
Consortium: ISSMC, LB Officine Meccaniche S.p.a.
The project, born from the collaboration between LB Officine Meccaniche and ISSMC-CNR, aims to transform the ceramics industry into a circular economy model characterised by low CO2 emissions and reduced energy and water consumption.
The main innovation lies in a ‘hybrid’ production system in which raw materials are dry-ground and subsequently granulated using plant wastewater and industrial waste, thereby overcoming the traditional, water-intensive wet grinding and spray-drying process.
The technology enables the production of tiles and large slabs with a high content of recycled materials, ensuring significant energy and water savings without compromising the aesthetic and technical quality of the final product. Within the consortium, LB Officine Meccaniche was responsible for the development of new machinery and industrial scalability, whilst ISSMC-CNR oversaw the scientific research into new formulations for the mixtures and the life cycle assessment (LCA). This holistic solution aims to reduce the carbon footprint and consumption of natural resources, thereby enhancing the sector’s technological competitiveness.
